Community Projects

For the Betterment of Our Community

Since its inception, the Woman’s Literary Club has worked to contribute to the Holland Community, one individual, one neighborhood, or one organization at a time.

From the early 20th century to the present, commitment to community projects and collaboration has continued for 127 years.

As early 1916, Woman’s Literary Club, as documented in its Annual Report, was asked by the Holland Conservation Committee to “survey the homes between Ninth and 16th Streets owners who wanted shade trees.” As a result of their combined efforts, 621 trees were planted along residential streets in Holland. Those trees are still providing shade today.

As an independent entity, or in collaboration with other community groups, the Woman’s Literary Club, over the past 127 years, continues their “usefulness of citizens” mission to benefit the Holland community.

“Lezend Meisje” or “Girl Reading”

The bronze statue by Netherland’s sculptor Bert Kiewiet, was commissioned by the Woman’s Literary Club in 1999.  The statue was donated to the Herrick District Library and is on display on the main level.

The Munchkin

The Woman’s Literary Club contributed funds for Wizard of Oz statues honoring L. Frank Baum’s time summering in Holland. The Munchkin is holding a book engraved with a quote from L. Frank Buam, honoring knowledge.  The exhibit, on the north side of Herrick Library, was dedicated in 2019.

Lida Rogers Plaque

A plaque honoring Lida Rogers, the woman who first advocated for the beautification of the city with the planting tulips and flowers, is located in the Window on the Waterfront park. The plaque was donated and dedicated by the Woman’s Literary Club in 2023. It is installed along a path in the Tulip Gardens.
