2025—2026 Programming

The Woman’s Literary Club meets seven times yearly, October through April.

Our November through March Programs are held the third Tuesday of the month at Hope Church, 77 W 11th St, Holland, MI 49423. Programs begin at 1:00 and are followed by a social hour.

Reservations are required for our October and April Luncheons

Various Pop-Up special events are scheduled as well throughout the year.

Valerie Marvin, Michigan Capitol Historian and Curator

Born of Hope and Indignation: Michigan Female College and the Fight for Coeducation

Fifteen years before University of Michigan or Michigan State University began admitting women, two sisters founded The Michigan Female College. The College was initially housed in Michigan’s Capitol Building and provided girls with access to previously unavailable higher education.  

Valerie Marvin, Michigan Capitol historian and curator, provides us with a fascinating history of women’s education in Michigan.  

Valerie is also a member of Lansing Women’s Club.

Urban Sketchers: See The World One Drawing at a Time!

Driven by a philosophy of shared creativity, Marcia Schrotenboer decided to sketch every day. Her group of Urban Sketchers is often seen around town and at public events.  Learn about the Urban Sketchers, how the group began in West Michigan, their processes and sketching philosophy.  All ages can sketch! 

Come and be inspired by her story. Sketch pads welcome!

Michael Naess: President and CEO, Holland Symphony Orchestra

Great Reeds:  A Chamber Group featuring Oboe, French Horn, and Organ.

Performance by Caitlin Kramer, Oboe; Rebecca Williams, English Horn, and Rhonda Edgington, Music Director at Hope Church. 

Enjoy Christmas chamber music, followed by information from CEO Michael Naess on the Holland Symphony Orchestra season highlights and the challenges of aging audiences.

The Holland Symphony Orchestra is a semi-professional orchestra with strong ties to the local community.  The Orchestra performs a variety of concerts throughout the season and promotes youth musical education with concerts for area 4th grade students, offers Youth Orchestra opportunities, and presents Kids Concerts with Herrick District Library.   

The Woman’s Literary Club Community Outreach Committee donates annually for the free Community Pops Concert held at Kollen Park in August.

Deborah Noe Schakel – Local historian and Woman’s Literary Club Member

Waukazoo, Marigold Lodge and Mary Jayne Gold

Member Deborah Schakel tells of the development of Marigold Lodge on Lake Macatawa at the turn of the 20th century in what is now the Waukazoo neighborhood, located on the North Side of Holland. 

Marigold Lodge, the summer home of the Gold family from Chicago, was named after wife Margaret and daughter Mary Jayne.  Learn the remarkable story about the heroic efforts of Mary Jayne Gold, a member of the Emergency Rescue Committee in 1940 Marseilles, France, to save countless people during the Nazi occupation of France.

“In the tradition of the original bluestockings, this is how we are taking things from Salons to social media in the book world,” says Aimee Chipman, owner of the Bluestocking Bookshop, in Holland MI.  Aimee will chat about her bookshop adventure and describe the shift in how authors and the publishing industry connect with readers.  Look up the definition for ‘bluestocking’ and you will find the meaning for every woman in Woman’s Literary Club.

Leslie Goddard – Historian and Actress portrays Lucille Ball

Woman’s Literary Club fan favorite, Leslie Goddard, returns this spring to bring Lucille Ball to life, paying tribute to both the true comic legend and the real woman behind the myth.

Leslie Goddard is an award-winning Chicago actress and scholar who has been portraying famous women and presenting history lectures for more than ten years. She holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, specializing in U.S. history and American Studies as well as master’s degrees in both theater and museum studies.
